Vacation adventures (or not)

I’ve had 4 friends sleep over at my place this vacation. And here I thought that I didn’t do anything for vacations! But it’s kind of different, I was trying to explain to Mom. You see, I wanted to go somewhere new and far and explore new adventures, maybe visit a new city or a new country. All my friends go far for vacations. This time of year is skiing season. We only do sledding. Mom said that having friends over was kind of its own adventure. I guess that’s another way to look at it.

Well, we did do some stuff that we don’t get to do every day maybe. We made a tent in my room, we made things from dough, we had water play, we played soccer with my brother, we drew and colored, we filmed a music video or two with my doodads of messes that we didn’t have to clean. Mom was okay to clean up after us whenever we did some of the cooking for her. So I was glad for that.

Though, because we didn’t care about how much mess we made, she was not so happy. She said it took her longer to clean up after us than it was for her to cook. Well, what else did we do? Oh yes, we recorded a song and a drama, we ate good food, we did more baking and cooking, so therefore had to do a bit of the cleaning this time.

Oh well, cleaning is really not my thing. It’s probably the one thing that bothers me about home. When I go to my friend’s house, I don’t have to clean or pick up anything. But at my house, my mom’s always behind me making sure I put away my dishes, pick up my clothes, put my shoes on the shelf. I get tired of that sometimes. It even makes me angry. Can’t my mom leave me alone for once? Can’t I get a real vacation for a change? Vacations from having to do any kind of cleaning at all?

The other family night we played a question game. One question said: “If you could have one wish, what would it be?” Well, I definitely knew mine. It would be to have a magic wand that I could zap my room with and it would be clean and tidy. Or touch my dish and it would automatically put itself in the dishwasher, then the dishwasher could tell on its own when it was full and turn itself on. And my bed… it would make itself as soon as I got out of it. Now wouldn’t be that something!

But… God doesn’t zap me with a wand to make me do something. He gently invites me to do the right thing. Then it’s up to me to decide. I guess I do kind of like that free choice better.

And, what would be your one top wish?

Dinner Prep

I was on dinner again yesterday because, well, I left the kitchen after lunch. What’s so bad about that? Well, it was my turn on dishes and by the time I got started with something else, I had totally forgotten that I was even on dishes. So instead of Mom having to call me back into the kitchen to do the job, she did it herself but then I had to do something in exchange for her, like cook dinner or… well, just cook dinner. Unless of course it’s dinner dishes that I’m on, then I usually still have to do it or pay her to do it. I sometimes pay her because I’m sooooo tired and I just feel like going to bed and watch something or read together as a family. Though it’s not really as a family if Mom still has to be in the kitchen doing dishes, or ME for that matter. I’m starting to just do it real quick and get it out of the way. It’s when I wait and wait before starting the job or get tripped off with something else, that it seems so long and hard to do.

Oh right, back to dinner prep, my favorite thing of all is to prepare salads. I like making salads chalk full of all kinds of things, stuffing it with as many healthy things that I can think of, that could match into it of course. I counted at dinner with Dad and Mom how many healthy things were in my salad. Actually, I had them count and figure out what I put in it, heehee. I couldn’t forget onions. That’s one of my very favorite things to spice up any and all dishes, besides sweet ones of course. They tell me that I got that from my grandpa, cause he loves onions too. They even made him a birthday meal that contained onions in each dish.

The only part of the onion that I don’t like is… well the preparation part. Peeling them is okay and my eyes get just a bit itchy. But then I get in a bundle of tears when peeling them. I end up not being able to see anything and I have to ask Mom to finish cutting it up for me. Today for dinner prep, I wasn’t going to let anything hold me back and I didn’t think I could ask Mom if I was to be doing dinner for her. So I got the bright idea… to…. Well, I ran upstairs to my swimming bag and got out my goggles. That should do the trick! I thought. And it did! It was a tight fit, too tight to let any onion air in my eyes and too tight to let out any tears too, if I had any. And best of all, Dad and Mom loved my salad and they counted 6 things in total, all healthy ones too. I congratulated myself with a cookie at the end.

My Cooking Inventions

My Mom said I could cook whatever I wanted, as long as I clean up after myself. I quickly borrow one of Mom’s computer screen (she’s using the other one but sometimes she doesn’t mind me watching something on the one she’s not using at the moment). She doesn’t do that all the time otherwise she gets too easily tripped off watching them with me, hee. But it kind of depends on what she’s working on. She can’t write while I’m watching, but sometimes she’ll draw or color, which gives her something to listen to at the same.

Anyway, this time a cooking program popped up, from one of the websites Mom had visited earlier in the day. And because I had the right ingredients, I decided to try it. Here I go! Mom even comes to join me as she’s so interested in this one! I blend up some peanuts, I add in some dates, first making sure you have the right dates, not the dates from the calendar which I tried when I was very young. Don’t ask me what happened there. After the peanuts (or any other kind of nuts you want to use instead) and the dates (without the seeds), I added in some cocoa powder and a dab of water to get the right consistency, not too dry but not liquid either. I got it just right to be able to roll them up into little balls. Then I dipped them in more crunched up nuts and put them in the fridge to keep cool.

Dad, Mom and some friends that we shared them with adored them. I do like trying out new cooking inventions, especially when I have to come up with something myself. I didn’t have hazelnuts so I used peanuts instead. Does that mean I made up my own recipe? I should see how many recipes I can alter with my own ideas. But I’ll just let you know of the ones that work.
